They are the creators and owners of The Fernweh House. In 2020, they set out to create a place where time moves differently. Where mornings are quiet, evenings linger, and the people you arrive with are the only ones who matter.
Kale grew up along this stretch of river and still calls it “The Shire of the Midwest.” Rolling hills, working farms, winding back roads, and a pace of life that never felt rushed. This landscape shaped him, and in many ways, it shaped The Fernweh House.
Nicole grew up on the West Coast but has come to feel just as at home here. Together, they value long dinners, unhurried conversations, and the kind of nights that end around a fire instead of a screen.
Today, they live in Los Angeles and work in the entertainment industry. It is a creative and fast-moving world, one they are thankful for. The Fernweh House is where they return to slow down, to gather with friends and family, and to settle back into the steady rhythm of the river.
Built as a retreat for the people they love, The Fernweh House remains a place for connection, reflection, and rest. They are grateful to share it with those seeking the same kind of quiet reset.

Mike and Cindy are Kale’s parents. They have lived along this stretch of river for more than forty years and still call it home.
They know the Oconto well — from fishing its bends to searching for old lures along its banks, and wandering the forests and fields nearby. Their connection to this place runs deep and steady.
They live just down the road and help care for Fernweh in the practical ways that matter. The woodpile stays stocked. The bird feeders stay full. Packages are brought inside. If something small needs attention, they are close by to handle it.
They are the steady presence here, ensuring the house feels cared for and ready when you arrive.
