Fireplace

How to safely use the wood-burning fireplace at The Fernweh House.

Watch →

The fireplace is one of the most beloved features of the house — but it requires a few important steps before you light it. Please read this page fully before use.

ImportantSkipping either of the first two steps below WILL fill the house with smoke. Please don't skip them.

Step 1 — Open the Flue

Open the flue on the back of the fireplace. The open position is when the toggle is parallel with the pipe. Do this before lighting anything.

Step 2 — Crack a Window

Open a living room window just a crack. This provides the airflow the fire needs to draw properly up the chimney.

Step 3 — Build the Fire

Arrange the provided firewood in an A-frame shape inside the fireplace. Use only the wood provided — it's dry hardwood selected to minimize smoke and sparks. Do not overload the fireplace.

Step 4 — Light It

Use the matches found on the bookshelf. Fire starter sticks are available if needed — use no more than 2 to get the fire going. Use the leather gloves and fireplace poker to rearrange logs as needed.

While It Burns

  • The fireplace and pipe get hot quickly — never touch with bare hands
  • Use the poker and gloves to add or rearrange logs
  • Never leave an active fire unattended
  • Do not over-stack — keep wood levels as shown in the guide photo

After the Fire

Once the fire has fully burned out, close the flue by turning the toggle perpendicular to the pipe. Do not empty the ashes — our housekeeping team manages that with a specialized vacuum.
